4 Halloween Decor Projects for a Bewitching Kitchen

I’ve always wanted a bewitching kitchen at Halloween. Honestly, I’ve always wanted to move into the inspiring Victorian house from Practical Magic for the month of October. Spending my time brewing up lotions in the conservatory. Arranging big pitchers of blood red roses from my garden. Lighting the candles over the mantel by blowing on them. And Climbing the spiral staircase to my room where there would always a perfect view of the ocean—and a full moon, of course. Sigh.

I’m not the only one who shares this obsession of living my October like a Good Witch, understanding how to make herbs do magical things. There is a little witch in all of us, Aunt Jet reminds us, so it’s natural that we want to tap into our inner witch this time of year.

Unfortunately, my family won’t move with me to a ficticious home so I have to bring a little magic to my own kitchen. It’s easier than you think to place a bewitching spell on your kitchen and I have a great line-up of projects—designed to take less than an hour to make in all, that will have you brewing midnight margaritas in no time.

It’s time to add bewitching touches to the room we use most! Dare to shake things up this year and move some of your decorationgs into the kitchen. These projects will add new touches to delight you each time you walk in the room.

This year I was blown away as I watched nature rest from the demands of summer and produce vines with tiny flowers and deep purple grasses that dance on the wind, begging to bewitch my kitchen. I also wanted to add some fun with foil colors like electric green and aqua blue. If those colors aren’t your idea of fun, no sweat! These projects work with any color combination that speaks to you.

Easy & Bewitching Kitchen Flower Arrangement Tutorial

October is when you finally get to throw open your windows making your kitchen feel a little like a witch’s conservatory. A flower arrangement is a must!

I have a huge island that begs for a large display. Specifically, one that spills wild grasses and vines with tiny flowers, and feels like it was made by a woman with her hands firmly planted in nature. I kept it really, really simple by arranging the stems in a shallow tray lined with water soaked floral foam. A conservatory has a wildness about it, so I didn’t fuss with the arrangement at all, and basically laid each stem to one side or the other.

If your kitchen would be overwhelmed by that type of display, try a pitcher of rosemary. Or a bucket of lavender. A great combination for the conservatory feel is a flowering herb arranged in a kitchen container that isn’t normally used for flowers. Baskets, pots, and pitchers make herbs look as if they’re being gathered for use in a recipe or tincture.

Supplies:

Cuttings from your garden or neighborhood.

A bucket, pitcher, or tray (make sure it can accommodate a couple inches of water)

Floral Foam

How to:

Cut floral foam with a kitchen knife to fit your container, and soak it in water. While that’s soaking, cut your stems. Rosemary and other woody stemmed plants benefit from crushing the bottom of the stem to allow better water flow. I use the handle of my knife. Alternatively, you can cut a few slits in the bottom 2 inches of the woody stem.

Once your stems are cut, place your floral foam in your container and begin to poke the stems into the foam as desired. Don’t overthink it. This should look “gathered” rather than “arranged”. Once you’re finished, fill your container with water.

Alternatively, you can skip the floral foam altogether and just arrange your stems in a pitcher filled with water!

Practical Magic: “There’s A Little Witch in All of Us” Wood Sign Tutorial

No October kitchen is complete without a nod to the witch in all of us. This 15-minute (seriously, 15) Cricut project is almost too easy!

Supplies:

A 5 ½” x 8’ piece of pine, cut down to 28”.

Cream craft paint and a sponge brush.

Cricut adhesive vinyl in black.

Cricut adhesive foil vinyl (we used the aqua from the Adhesive Foil Sampler here).

Chalk line (if you already have one)

How To:

Paint your pine cream. While that’s drying, cut your vinyl using the Cricut machine. The letters are cut from black vinyl, and the embellishments from the aqua foil out of the Adhesive Foil Stainless Sampler. I used my trusty chalk line to give me a center line for aligning the letters. Once attached, I had a great sign for my bewitching kitchen. If you don’t have a chalk line, draw a faint pencil line through the center of your board and use it to align your lettering. Erase the pencil line once your vinyl is in place. If you like your sign to be shabby chic, simply sand the edges with a piece of sandpaper.

Bewitching Halloween Kitchen Towel Iron-on Project

Changing out your kitchen towels is such an easy way to bring October to your kitchen, and it’s time to replace those worn-out towels anyway. I’m a fan of making your own towels because they’re super-easy, and completely unique. Every year I pick up a dozen or so flour sack towels to embellish. This year, I kept the bewitching kitchen theme and did a super-simple witch using Cricut to cut an iron-on.

Supplies:

2 White Flour Sack Kitchen Towels.

Cricut Iron-on Foil in lime green (click here for the one I used)

How To:

Since flour sack towels come in a variety of sizes, determine how you want to fold your towel and how you want the witch displayed on the towel. Use a tape measure to determine the ideal size for the witch, and adjust the witch size in the project to fit your towel.

Cut the Iron-on material according to the directions and iron it onto your towel.

Bewitching Halloween Spell Book for Your Kitchen: Easy Craft Project

What witch’s kitchen is complete without a spell book? This book will cast a bewitching spell without stealing your time.

Supplies:

An old book. I picked mine up at a thrift store for $3.99. I chose it because I liked the look and feel of the pages, and I liked the white fabric cover. The spell pages are a JPEG file, so you can print them in full page ( 8 ½” x 11”) or 5” x 7”. Keep those dimensions in mind when searching for your perfect spell book.

The free printable spell pages from Inspiring Ocean. (UPDATE 2019 – The Spell pages I used are no longer available. I have seen similar printables on Etsy, or you can design your own.)

Scrapbook tape.

Pick up a nice book easel while you’re at the thrift store buying your book.

How-To:

Open your book to the center. You want to tape the spell pages where the book naturally lays open. Once you’ve found the center, use the scrapbook tape to attach the spell pages over the top of the two book pages.

Display your book somewhere near your stove!
