Scandinavian Buffalo Check DIY Christmas Ornaments

Maybe it’s because buffalo check reminds us of cabins with big windows to watch the snow fall, but it’s all the rage for Christmas these days.  The challenge is to bring a little of the warmth of buffalo check into your Christmas without spending a lot of money.  DIY wooden ornaments are the perfect answer!  They have a great rustic feel because they’re made from wooden rounds, and feature simple Scandinavian inspired woodland animals.  Immediately, these ornaments bring the feeling of a snowy cabin to a fake, flocked tree.

SUPPLIES:

4- 3″ Wood Rounds.  You can buy or make them.  I made mine by cutting the wood with a hole-saw (basically a really big drill bit), and then drilled a small hole at the top to hang them.  I love using wood leftovers this way, but it’s just as easy to purchase ornament wood rounds, and you can get them with the bark still on the wood–really cute too.

Scrapbook paper in your desired Buffalo check and one in a contrasting color.  You can get 12 ornaments per 12×12 sheet

White or off-white paint

TO ASSEMBLE:

Paint your wood rounds.  While they’re drying, trace the animals on the buffalo check paper.  I mixed it up by tracing some parts of the animals onto the buffalo check and some on the black.  I also cheated and uploaded the penguin into Cricut Design Space so the machine could cut out the snowflake on his belly (and for some reason Cricut won’t let me share that uploaded file with you), but you can just as easily create the snowflake by placing a sticker or a piece of snowflake confetti on his belly.

Once the animals have been traced, put the paper on top of a corrugated cardboard box lid as a cushion while you cut the pieces out with the Exacto knife.

Place your animal pieces on the wood round, leaving small gaps between the pieces so that the negative space creates an outline of the animal.  Once you like the way it looks, pick up each piece one at a time and brush some Modge Podge on the back, sticking it in place on the wood round.  Once all the pieces are in place and glued down, you can sweep a coat of Modge Podge over the entire wood round so that the design is firmly glued and sealed.

If you want a shabby chic look, sand the edges of the wood round a bit.  You can tie the ornaments to the tree with twine or ribbon.

If the idea of cutting small pieces turns you off, you can make cute ornaments with a simple outline of the animal in Buffalo check.  Make the project work for you!
