Cactus and succulents are having their moment in the sun, and it couldn’t happen soon enough for me. Living in the desert has given me an appreciation of the struggle it can be to blossom and grow with the heat beating down on you. I marvel at the beautiful cacti and succulents I have in my yard that continue to thrive under sometimes fierce conditions. Interesting how that has become a theme in our lives and in our home decor.
My daughter is one of those amazing girls who thrive in spite of struggles. I have been a little behind on posts this week because we’ve been busy helping with a fundraiser that will be taking place for her. She is 12 years-old and has Alopecia. I didn’t know what it was either, until she was diagnosed with it after losing all her hair in a few short months last spring. Basically, Alopecia is unexplained hair loss without an underlying condition. It was great news to know that our daughter wasn’t seriously ill and terrible news to realize that she could be bald for the foreseeable future. It’s a tough spot for a girl to be in–especially in Junior High where everyone is struggling to belong.
Cactus and Succulent Botanical Prints
This year she wants tattooed eyebrows and to redecorate her room. It’s understandable since she still has the llama artwork and stuffed animal zoo in her bedroom, but she’s having a bit of a hard time letting go because she has this huge heart for animals whether they’re real or stuffed. To ease into it, we started by looking at a lot of pictures on Houzz, trying to decide on her new style. She settled on “Palm Springs” inspired decor.
It’s really important to have your kids be part of the interior design process once they’re old enough to have an opinion on the room. Letting them work on the DIY projects and choose the accessories helps educate them in a fun way and it makes them more accountable for their own room. They have a reason to keep it clean because they love everything in the room. I learned this the hard way when I decorated my son’s room and spent a frustrating year fighting with him about keeping his room picked up. Once I gave up and asked him what he wanted, we moved out half the furniture and accessories for a simple pared-down design and it’s been much better for both of us.
These cactus and succulent botanical prints are the result of the first step of her plan for her new room. She wants to make her own artwork. She has great plans for some original artwork using the Cricut that we will feature soon. We started working together on the design of these botanical prints and they are absolutely beautiful. Classic botanical prints with the modern style featuring of-the-moment cacti and succulents. I love her use of definitions in the design–especially “oasis” because our homes are exactly that.
I was going to offer these in our shop, but she really wanted them to be free and I couldn’t agree more. Everyone should be blessed with her optimistic designs.
