DIY Christmas Stocking Charms
Personalize your Christmas Stockings with Handmade Charms
Christmas stocking charms are an amazing idea born of necessity. Thanks to the restrictive luggage sizes airlines allow my relatives arrived for Christmas with a miniature suitcase filled with presents and a toothbrush. Since I want their stay to be magical, I didn’t want them to miss out on the tradition of waking up to a Christmas stocking filled with goodies. But personalizing a stocking for everyone is time-consuming and I never know which relatives will be visiting until a few days before they arrive (because we LeBaron’s are kind of spur of the moment people.) So….I decided to make simple Christmas Stocking Charms for everyone to clip to their stocking. You’ll never believe how easy they are to make! Check out my ideas below to get started and before you know it you’ll be creating Christmas Stocking Charms of your own.
Let’s get crafty, ladies—you know you want to!

CHRISTMAS STOCKING CHARMS FROM MINI-ORNAMENTS
First of all, don’t be buying those cheap $3 red and white Christmas Stockings and a bottle of glitter glue so your guest has their own stocking. Buy a few stockings on sale or after Christmas clearance in a neutral color, or red or green to have on hand when guests visit and then create a charm for their stock that they can take home as a keepsake.
I created this Christmas Stocking Charm using a set of small ornaments I bought on those fabulous 50% off sales that Michaels, Joanns and Hobby Lobby has. Using Christmas ornament sets gives you a huge variety of options to fit any Christmas theme, or that speak to your guest. Have a Broncos fan coming to visit? Make a charm using Bronco ornaments.
Items Needed:
- Ornament Set
- Thin Gold or Silver Wire
- Necklace Clasp (optional)
Remove the strings on the ornaments and wire them together in a line. You can just twist the wire around the stocking hanger, or you can add a necklace clasp or a lobster clasp to the top so that your guest can take it home and use it as a purse charm or keychain.

CHRISTMAS STOCKING CHARMS FROM GLOBE ORNAMENTS
This idea isn’t mine–it came from my talented niece. She used mini glass globe ornaments to make personalized Christmas Stocking Charms for each of us.
Items Needed:
- Mini glass (or plastic) globe ornaments (these are about 2.5 inches in diameter) with removable tops.
- Glitter
- Decoart Glass Paint Marker in white
Remove the tops of the ornaments. Create a funnel using rolled up paper and fill ornament with about a teaspoon of glitter (it will stick to the sides and look full). Replace the top. Using the glass paint marker, write their name on the outside of the ornament.

Christmas String-of-Lights Stocking Charm
This just might be my favorite Christmas Stocking Charm. I love how a strand of Christmas lights is perfect for a vertical charm–it just works, if you know what I mean.
Items Needed
- Small wooden Christmas Light parts like these.
- Craft paint in red, green, yellow, white and silver.
- Green floral wire.
- Lobster clips.
Paint the light bulbs and let them dry. Thread the floral wire through the holes in the top of the wooden light bulb. Twist to secure. Twist the wire around itself to form the section of “wire” between each of the light bulbs. Add a light bulb every two inches or so until the charm is the length you want. Twist the top of the wire around the lobster clip.
I’m pretty sure that I’m going to make a whole lot more Christmas Stocking Charms in the years to come. They’re easy and I love how they add character to classic Christmas Stockings. I think I’ll change my Christmas Stocking Charms every Christmas since I like to change up my theme a bit each year too.
