DIY Floral Arrangements the Easy Way
There is an easy method of creating pretty floral arrangements that anyone can use. And I do mean anyone. I used to be so intimidated by flower arranging despite being taught a lot about it from my sister-in-law honest to goodness floral designer, that I would just buy my arrangements. But this blog is all about empowering the DIY fire within and I refused to be held back by fear.
The FREE Floral Design Cheat Sheet helps you arrange flowers the easy way Click To TweetI suffered from floral paralysis. For me, it may have been a problem of information overload. Which flowers need wire stem support? Have I properly prepared the floral foam? What types of greenery should I use? Once these questions started rolling around in my head I would panic and give up on the idea of creating a floral arrangement. If fresh flowers came into my home, I would fill a vase with water and shove them in it.
The problem is that flowers really brighten your home, especially if your home is naturally dark. That’s my house. There are dark places where a live plant would never survive, but a simple silk floral arrangement really helps. Deciding to face my fears I ran out and purchased at 253 page book on floral arranging. What was I thinking? Those books are for enthusiasts. I needed simple. I resolved to read the book and create a really fast, easy way of arranging flowers that anyone could use. The KISS method of flower arranging.
FLORAL DESIGN MADE SIMPLE
With this method you only have to make two decisions. Do you want a horizontal (short and long) or vertical (tall & skinny) flower arrangement? And, do you want it to be symmetrical (even on all sides) or assymetrical (uneven like a right triangle?) Once you make those two decisions, you use the cheat sheet to create your floral arrangement. Each stem on the cheat sheet represents a major stem in your arrangement. Shove them into a piece of floral foam at the angle shown on the sheet and voila! You have a basic arrangement.
For the arrangement below, I chose a vertical and asymmetrical and used the cheat sheet to place my main floral stems into the arrangement. I used some floral picks for my filler (greenery) to make the arrangement fuller. That’s it, and while I’ve seen much more beautiful arrangements I’m pretty happy with the end result.
The problem with nuanced arts, like flower arranging, is that it’s easy to believe that you need to be an artist before giving it a try. This method helps you overcome that paralysis. If you have trouble finishing projects you should check out our 7 Tips to Turn Your Project Into a Reality.
