FARMHOUSE APRONS & TOWELS

INSPIRED BY MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY MOVIE:  CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT (1945)

We all lead two lives–the professional working woman life and the domestic goddess life.  Whether your professional life revolves accounting & tax planning (guilty as charged), the busy-organized stay-at-home-mom (who is never home thanks to the mini-van taxi service), or something in between, we’re always dreaming of our domestic goddess life.  In that life we’re endlessly gracious.  Our homes are immaculate and tasteful.  We’re perfect hosts–able to pull together an Oscar worthy party without breaking a sweat.  Our husbands and children adore us, and we are always well-styled.  Maybe we even dream of vacuuming in heels like June Cleaver.

That’s why I love Christmas in Connecticut!  Barbara Stanwyck has been leading a double life.  She writes for a newspaper as a home and family expert, but even her boss doesn’t know that she’s a writer–not a domestic goddess!  So, when her boss invites himself and a returning war hero to her home for a traditional Christmas, she has to cover for her deception by pulling off the perfect holiday.

This farmhouse apron project honors traditional homemakers, with a wink to the entertaining housewives of the 1970’s with a half-apron that’s designed for serving cocktails in style rather than keeping your clothes spotless through endless batches of cookies.  You can make these beauties for any holiday and any occasion because they’re easy and can be completed in an afternoon.  The ruffles add whimsy to the traditional half-apron, almost turning into a dressy skirt that you can tie around your waist.

Since this is a tribute to Christmas movies, we can’t complete our project without adding some new towels to the kitchen.  This 30-minute Cricut project lets everyone know where our domestic goddess wants to be:  baking stuff and watching Christmas movies all day.

FARMHOUSE APRONS TUTORIAL

SUPPLIES:

1 yard printed cotton fabric

2/3 yard contrasting printed cotton fabric

1 piece of 24″ x 12″ fabric for the lining.

TO ASSEMBLE:

From the 1-yard fabric piece, cut one 60″x 6″ strip, and one 70″ x 6″ strip.

From the 2/3 yard fabric piece, cut two 60″x 6″ strips.

Hem the 24″ x 12″ lining fabric by turning it under 1/4″ twice.

Hem the 60″ x 6 ” strips on three sides (the two short sides and the bottom long side) by turning it under 1/4″ twice.

Fold the 70″ x 6″ strip in half long ways (this is your apron tie piece), right sides together.  Sew along long edge and one short edge with a 1/4″ seam allowance.  Turn the tie right side out and press so that it looks like a long tie.  Turn the open end under and sew shut.  Press the end.

Sew the 3- 60″ x 6″ strips along the raw edge with a gathering stitch.  If you aren’t using a gathering foot, use a wide stitch and pull the thread to create your ruffle.  The ruffles should be 24 inches long when finished.

Sew the 3-60″ strips (now 24″ long with the ruffle) onto the lining fabric.  Alternate the ruffles–first one fabric design, then the other.  Start by sewing the first strip 6″ up from the bottom of the liner.  Sew the second strip 6″ above the first strip on the liner, making sure that the second ruffle covers the top of the first ruffle so you can’t see the raw edge.  Sew the third strip along the top of the liner.  Sew the apron tie on top of the third strip by lining up the middle of the tie to the middle of the apron skirt.

That’s it!  If you don’t like the exposed raw edge of the ruffles, you can fold a piece of the liner over the raw edge of the ruffles (strips #1 and #2) and sew to cover like I did, but it’s not necessary.  These fun aprons are pretty accessories rather than a workhorse apron, so they won’t be washed often enough for the raw edge to be a problem.

Farmhouse Kitchen Towels

 

This is a Cricut or die cut machine project.

Supplies:

2-Linen towels.  (I bought a table runner from the Dollar Spot at Target for $3 and cut it in half, so you can be creative with your towel material.)

The SVG cut files (links in the project sheet)

Iron On Lite in black

To Assemble:

Upload the cut files into your design software and size the images to fit nicely on your towels.

Cut the images on Iron On Lite material.

Weed your design and iron it on the center of the towel.
