How to Make Personalized Gift Tags
We all take the time to pick out perfect gifts, but can have a lot of trouble coming up with the perfect gift tags. Why not make your own gift tags? There’s so many ways to do it, and most can be completed in 10 minutes or under! There’s just no excuse for not doing it. Here’s an easy guide to making inspiring gift tags.
BEFORE YOU START MAKING YOUR GIFT TAGS
- Take a minute to decide what would really make your recipient smile? If they’re funny, a gift tag with a joke on the flip-side might be a great fit. If they love horiscopes, why not include a prediction?
- What do you have on hand? Gift tags are a great way to use up those craft supplies you’ve been stashing.
- How much time do you have? If you’re in a hurry then choose a design that’s really simple. Got more time? Add some extra layers to the tag to make it stand out.
WAYS TO MAKE A STAND-OUT GIFT TAG
- Wrap the gift in brown craft paper or white butcher paper. Give your gift tag a chance to stand out with a neutral background.
- Keep going! I love to add lots of layers, so if it looks too plain then adding an extra sticker or other embellishment will probably make a huge difference in the finished gift tag.
- Pop-ups! Use foam adhesive dots, brass brads, and mini-staples to lift design elements off the page and give the tag extra dimension.
- Enjoy the process. It’s so much more fun to make a tag if you’re enjoying the process. Use a little trial and error when putting together papers, embellishments and ribbons.
- Multi-media. You can go way beyond stickers and pens for making gift tags. Use a variety of supplies to make it sing.
- Start with a Printable. Bloggers offer tons of free printable gift tags (myself included–check out the freebie library for some). Start with a pre-made tag and add embellishments.
BASIC SUPPLIES YOU’LL NEED
- Scissors
- Paper – preferably cardstock or scrapbook paper
- An old gift tag to trace–one that you like the shape of
- Glue
- Ribbon or Twine
- Hole punch
HOW TO GET STARTED
- Gather your supplies in a small basket or box so that you’ll always have it ready when you need to make a quick tag.
- Cut out several tags in different papers using your template.
- I like to use small envelopes to gather stickers, clipart, and ephemera that go together (colors, seasons, themes) so that I can make a color-coordinated card fast.
- Add to your collection. I made the tags you see above using fortunes from Panda Express cookies because I saved the fortunes in my stash. It’s amazing all the little things that would be cute on a tag that we just throw away. Instead, add them to your collection.
