How to Make your Own (Almost) Original Art for Dirt Cheap
How to Make your Own (almost) Original Art for Dirt Cheap
Original art is a luxury item (meaning it’s too expensive for little ole you and me), but I’m going to let you in on a little secret. You can make your own (almost) original art for dirt cheap.
There are over six billion paintings, photos and decorative items on the walls of homes in America. That’s a lot of money hanging on our walls. And we spent a lot of time trying to find art that we love, we can afford, and we don’t see hanging in every other home in the neighborhood.
Remember this metal artwork? Yep, so do I. I’m guilty of hanging these in 60 vacation units. But, I’m not the only one–it seemed like everyone had this hanging in their home and some time. It’s still available online from 50+ stores according to google. So popular for no good reason.
It’s time to stop the madness! (that phrase isn’t trademarked, is it?) You can have (mostly) original art without having to take painting lessons. In fact, all you need is to enjoy shopping and own a staple gun. See? Told you it was easy.

This is crazy girl project # 22. To recap, crazy girl projects are for women who want to save crazy amounts of time and money, but still make fabulous stuff for the home. So, we’re all crazy girls around here.
My daughter loves llamas. Yep, those long necked spitting animals are her fave, and she wanted them to grace her room. The only problem is that we couldn’t find any art that she wanted. What we did find was this cool llama shopping bag from HomeGoods, and an inspired idea was born. What if we turned this $1.50 bag into canvas art?
It was so easy! Here’s the lowdown on this project:
Buy your shopping bag, or t-shirt or whatever else you love that you want to turn into art.
- Buy an artist’s canvas from a craft store the size that you need to display your art. Remember that you’re going to wrap the bag around the canvas frame when choosing the size. Cut the bag into a single layer Wrap it around the canvas and staple.
That’s it! The hardest part is the corners (which aren’t that hard, you just have to tuck and fold them.)
Here’s some cool bags that would make great art! Pretty please send pictures if you make a shopping bag into art. I can’t wait to see what you’ve made!
